[01] House President meets with EU and Egyptian Ambassadors

The President of Cyprus' House of Representatives, Mr Dimitris Christofias, had a meeting yesterday with the Ambassador of the European Commission in Cyprus, Mr Donato Giovanni Chiarini.

Mr Christofias reiterated that a solution to the Cyprus problem must safeguard the human rights of all Cypriots in a bicommunal and bizonal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.

As regards Cyprus' accession to the EU, he said that the House of Representatives is ready to fulfill its role of harmonising the island's legislation with the acquis communautaire.

Mr Christofias also met with the Egyptian Ambassador, Mr Omar Metwallym, with whom he exchanged views as regards bilateral relations between the two countries.

[02] Cyprus elected on FAO Council

During the deliberations of the 120th Meeting of the Council of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation currently being held in Rome, Cyprus was elected to serve as a member of the Council for the period 2001 - 2003.

Cyprus' Permanent Representative, Ambassader George Pavlides, speaking at an official dinner he gave on this occasion, said Cyprus would work hard to live up to the duties it was undertaking, and looked forward to hosting the FAO Regional Conference for Europe in May 2002..
