[01] Greek Coalition Party President in Cyprus for talks

The Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides held talks yesterday with the President of the Greek Coalition Party Mr Nicos Constantopoulos, who is in Cyprus for a two-day visit.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Kasoulides said that Mr Constantopoulos' presence on the island is a demonstration of his interest and love for Cyprus. He said that during their meeting he and Mr Constantopoulos had the opportunity to exchange views on national issues, including the efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, Cyprus' EU accession course, the Greek - Turkish dialogue and problems that are common between Greece and Cyprus.

In his statement Mr Constantopoulos said that his party fully supports Cyprus' accession to the European Union. Cyprus fulfils all preconditions for inclusion in the enlargement of the EU without any obstacle. What is most important is the solution of the Cyprus problem, so that Cyprus as one state, one entity, with the peaceful co-existence of all its inhabitants safeguarded, will be able to function as a member state of the EU, he added.

Mr Constantopoulos said that the prospect of the talks, now in progress, is of great concern to all. He pointed out that this is a critical period and a substantial effort is needed in order to achieve a just solution to the Cyprus problem and the unimpeded entry of Cyprus to the EU.

The Greek politician also had a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias. During their discussions Mr Constantopoulos stressed that the interest of his party for Cyprus is steady, sincere and always expressed with acts. He pointed out that his visit to Cyprus at this period had exactly this meaning, to show how critical this period is and to express support for a just and viable solution within the framework of a bizonal federation with one sovereignty, one international entity and one personality.

[02] Annan and Cem discuss Cyprus issue

The Cyprus problem was one of the issues discussed during a meeting on 4 February, in New York, between the UN Secretary General Mr Kofi Annan and the Turkish Foreign Minister Mr Ismail Cem.

In his statement to the press after the meeting, Mr Cem said that the Cyprus issue was among the issues he discussed with Mr Annan.

Asked whether there were prospects for Cyprus Mr Cem said that he is always very cautious about this issue.
