 Elections 2000With the national elections just 5 days away,political parties have concentrated their activities on the best organisation of their final pre-election rallies in Athens. It is believed, however, that voters, still undecisive, will determine the winner of the forthcoming elections.
Ôhe Greek Communist party is holding a rally in Athens at the Pedion tou Areos. The general secreatry of the party Aleca Papariga will address to supporters of her party.
Ôhe president of the Coalition of the Left and Progress Nikos Konstantopoulos delivered a speech to a gathering of his party supporters at the Omonia Square in Athens. Bipolarism was the focus of his speech.
Prime minister Kostas Simitis in his speech in Thessaloniki referred to the basic axis of the psok party program for the next 4year term. Mr.Simitis committed himself to complete the social state, sped up reforms in the health system, regional development and the promotion of Thessaloniki to the capital of the Balcans.
In his interview at the Zappion Mansion the president of the ND party Kostas Karamanlis presented the basic aspects of his party's economic policy. He stressed that the combat of unemployment and the speeding up of privatisations would be the top priorities of his party if it was the winner in the April 9, elections. Mr. Karmanlis who has invited the youth to a party at the "Ågli" restaurant added that no pension would be under 150 thousand dracmas as from January 1st 2001.
Public works and environment minister, Kostas Laliotis, who is the head of the Pasok party coomunication policy, sent 8 roses to Mr. Karamanlis, in a symbolic move, to indicate that the president of the ND party has no reasons to fear stabs in the back from the pasok party but from his party.
Prime-minister Simitis will deliver a speech to a gathering of Pasok party supporters in Kozani. According to reports Mr. Simitis has called on his collaborators and candidate deputies to continue their pre-election campaign up to the last moment.
In her speech in Nea Ionia, the general secretary of the Greek Communist party, Aleca Papariga exercised strong criticism on the goverment and described its announcemnt for increase in pensions as promises to attract voters.
The president of the Democratic Social movement party Dimitris Tsovolas delivered a speech in Giannena while he will tour the prefecture of Fthiotida. In a press interview, Mr. Tsovolas called voters to condemn both the Pasok and the ND parties.
 Meeting between Greek prime-minister Simitis and German president RhauThe course of the European Union, the situation in the Balcans, the Cyprus issue, Greek-Turkish relations and bilateral issues were the subjects of talks between Greek prime-minister Kostas Simitis and the German president Yohan Rhau. In the meantime the president of the Federal Republic of Germany visited Kalavrita accompanied by his Greek counterpart Kostis Stefanopoulos to attend events in memory of the victims of the massacre in 1943. Mr. Rhau laid a wreath at the monument erected in memory of those executed by the nazi in 1943.
 President Klerides in the USCypriot president Glafkos Klerides is on a 3-day visit to the US to innagurate the the exhibition of Cypriot antiquities at the NY Metropolitan museum. During his stay in America, Mr. Klerides will have a number of meeting with American officials. Today, Mr. Klerides willhave a working breakfast at the hotel he is staying, with american officials including the presidential envoy Alfred Moyses while on Thursday he will deliver a speech on the developments in the Cyprus issue at the Middle East Forum.
Mr. Klerides will fly to London on Friday where he will meet with the British prime-minister Tony Blair and Sir David Hanney.
On Monday, Cyprus High Commissioner to London Mihalis Attalidis will host a dinner in his honour. President Klerides willreturn to Cyprus on Tuesday, April 11.
 The congress of the European Youth Parliament is being held in AthensThe congress of the European Parliament Youth will be held in Athens from April 6-16 with the aim to promote the European Conference on education. Two hundred young people from EU member states and observer countries willexpress their views on educational issues. Presenting the program of the congress, the president of the Greek section of the European Youth Parliament, Marila Katra stated that it was a great honour for the city of Athens to organise the European Youth parliament congress of the year 2000 since at the opening of the new millenium youth from all over Europe will meet in the city of Athens, the craddle of civilisation and democracy.
