    [01] Elections 2000

    The pre-election period in Greece culminateä with the main rally in Athens by the ruling PASOK party.

    Mr Simitis addressed a gathering in Pyrgos and referred to the program of Pasok for the new four year term with emphasis to the sectors of health, education, agriculture and tourism development that will emanate from the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

    In a similar rally, main opposition New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis spoke to thousands of party supporters in the Athens Olympic Stadium and referred to his party's priorities for the next day of the elections, stressing that the party's highest aims were the prosperity of the country and of all the Greeks.

    Meanwhile, the secretary general of the Greek Communist Party Aleka Papariga, called on voters to depart from the usual practice of casting a vote for either of the two major parties.

    The leader of the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress Nikos Konstantopoulos addressed a rally in central Thessaloniki and said that Thessaloniki risked to be pushed out of the limelight due to the lack of infrastructure, while he called on the people to vote the Coalition party.

    The president of the Democratic Social Movement Dimitris Tsovolas addressed a gathering also in Thessaloniki and claimed that his party had an integral alternative proposal of power, expressing and promoting the interests of the country and of the non privileged Greeks. Mr Tsovolas suspended his pre-election activities, due to the death of a person in his family.

    [02] Cyprus' accession course to the EU

    An important step for Cyprus' accession course to the EU was achieved in Brussels yesterday, as the chapter on common foreign policy and political security closed, after the decision made by the permanent representatives of the 15 EU member states in the intergovernmental conference.

    The head of the negotiating delegation George Vasiliou, praised Greece's contribution to the speeding up of the relative procedures, stressing that the pace of negotiations was the greatest proof for the work that has been done and of everyone's determination for further progress.

    On the occasion of his presence in Brussels for the Intergovernmental Conference on Cyprus' admission to the EU on negotiations level, Mr Vasiliou also had a meeting with the vice-president of the European Commission, also responsible for Transport and energy issues, the Spanish Commissioner Lojola de Palacio and the Austrian Commissioner responsible for Agriculture and Fishery Franz Fishler.

    With regard to the chapter on Agriculture, it ensued from the talks the commissioner had that no problems are expected to arise when the relative negotiations will start. Mr Vasiliou brought up to Mr Fishler, the issue of consolidating the Cypriot "Haloumi" cheese, as an exclusively Cypriot traditional product.

    [03] Andrew Athens in Kiev

    The president of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, Andrew Athens, is on a visit to Kiev, Ukraine, in the framework of the Council's humanitarian mission to the ethnic Greek communities of the new republics of the former soviet Union. Mr Athens will meet with officials of Ukraine to prepare the further elaboration of the program of the basic medical care for the ethnic Greeks in the region of Marioupoli and Donetsk.

    [04] Meeting of Orthodox churches of Europe

    A meeting of representatives of Europe's Orthodox churches was held in Constantinople. Ecumenical patriarch Vartholomeos of Constantinople delivered a speech at the meeting which prepared the so-called ecumenical charter concerning the cooperation between the European Union and all the Christian churches. Alexandros Rontos, the special envoy of the Greek foreign minister George Papandreou attended the meeting and point out that politics went through religion and not religion through politics.

    [05] Fire on the island of Samos

    On the island of Samos, the major fire that burnt to ashes approximately 1,000 acres of forest and farming land is now fully under control.
