Peace talks in the Hague between the Greek and Turkish leaders of Cyprus, Tasos Papadopoulos and Raulf Dektash under the auspices of the UN collapsed and the UN Secretary General announced the end of his efforts to reunite the island before its accession to the E.U.

Regretably peace efforts were not a success We have reached the end of the road said a statement by UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan read out by his special Cyprus envoy Alvaro de Sotto at a news conference after the conclusion of the marathon talks

Cyprus President, Tasos Papadopoulos said we have not reached an agreement because Dektash did not accept the UN peace plan.

The UN Secretary General made a number of proposals to satisfy both sides which the Turkish Cypriot leader rejected. He said that although he had suggested the two leaders keep negotiating until March 28 and hold a referendum on April 6, this was not possible. Papadopoulos was ready to keep trying but Dektash ruled out further immediate talks, Annan said.

In the meantime, in the occupied parts of Cyprus, the Turkish Republican and the Community Liberation parties , who don't trust Dektash handling , yesterday announced the holding of a referendum on the acceptance or not of the UN plan on March 30
