The European Commission is examining FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) Prime Minister Nicola Gruevskis letter, since it should be assessed by all relevant EU agencies prior to an answer, stated the European Commission spokesman on Tuesday. The letter arrived in Brussels on Friday, but due to the three-day holiday its content has not been examined yet. A reply will come out in the coming days, as the Commission never answers on the spur of the moment, said the spokesman. Referring to the letter, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyannis argued that Gruevski "can brief anyone on his views. Besides, the European Union and all partners have been fully briefed on the Greek positions."

    Sources: NET, NET 105.8, ANA-MPA

The wildfire that broke out Tuesday noon near the village of Agios Isidoros on the island of Rhodes has grown out of control, threatening the woods of mountainous Rhodes. The strong winds blowing in the area are hampering the task of the ground and air forces operating to put out the blaze. In the meantime, at a press conference held at the headquarters of the Greek Socialist party (PASOK), Socialist MPs H. Kastanides and Sp. Kouvelis lashed out at the Government, blasting it for slow response, lack of coordination, inability to man the relevant agencies and lack of prevention plans against wildfires.

    "The Government Is Unprepared"

"We hope nothing disastrous happen, because yet again the Government, despite last years devastating fires, is unprepared," underlined Kastanides, further warning the Government that should something devastating happen, it will be held responsible.

Messrs Kastanides and Kouvelis unveiled a study carried out by the European Parliament on the wildfires that hit Greece in 2007 and submitted a package of anti-fire measures, as well as another for the restoration of the fire-stricken areas.

Terming it an act of terror, Israeli police officers shot the driver dead. The Israeli media described the attack as an exact copy of the massacre that took place in early July, when another Palestinian claimed four Israelis while driving a bulldozer. The attack occurred while Israeli President Shimon Peres hosted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at his official residence for the first time ever. [09] Barroso to Answer Today

    22 Ιουλ 2008 11:11:0

The Commission President José Manuel Barroso will reply to Gruevskis appeal to the EU to intervene in protection of the alleged "Macedonian minority" in Greece. A dialogue between the two countries will focus only on the name issue and within the UN framework said the government. Government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos stated that in his letter to Mr Gruevski, the prime minister had given a crystal-clear, stern and historically documented answer. However, PASOK (Socialists) commented that with his letter to Mr Gruevski, the prime minister appears to be showing indirectly that he accepts Skopjes agenda of talks. In reply, on an interview with NET 105.8, ND Parliamentary Group Secretary Tragakis stated that the prime minister had to answer back to Mr Gruevskys provocative letter, adding however that Athens should not answer again and commence a dialogue with Skopje.
