  • [01] Alter Private Television Hit

Gunmen opened fire at the premises housing Alter private television in Athens on Tuesday evening. According to flash indications, the four gunmen opened fire at the cars in the parking lot and hurled an object, probably an improvised explosive device which did not went off. The hit caused damage only. All political parties blasted the attack.

Wearing helmets, the assailants approach the channel's premises from the rear, when a technician was exiting the place.

They told him to go away and then hurled an object, resembling to a beer bottle, at the parking space.

They also opened fire at the cars, causing damage to four of them. They then vanished into thin air on their motorbikes.

Both the government and the political parties condemned the attack.

"This attack on Alter television is coward criminal act against information, social peace, safety and Democracy itself. Such actions are doomed by the entire society. I offer the government's sympathy to the Alter personnel. Authorities will fully investigate the case," said Government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros.

"It is a violent, criminal attack, which could have claimed lives. We condemn it the same way we condemn similar terrorist attack. A hit on media is a hit against the freedom of expression. Authorities have to solve the case and refer the assailants to Justice," argued PASOK spokesman Giorgos Papakonstantinou.

"The repeated assaults indicate the existence of a provocative plan that facilitates measures against the labour movement. This is the key goal," commented the Greek Communist Party (KKE).

SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) vehemently condemned the criminal hit against Alter television. "It is an attack on the free expression of the Press and an unacceptable form of censorship."

"Attacks on journalism are attacks on Democracy itself. We offer our support to the Alter personnel," said Kyriakos Velopoulos, press spokesman of LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally).
