    [03] Finance Minister - Cyprus economy

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) - Finance Minister Takis Klirides described the indicators of the Cyprus economy for this year as "very encouraging", noting at the same time that the prospects for the economy were also encouraging for the year 2001.

    Speaking after a meeting of governmental officials who evaluated the Cyprus economy, Klirides said this year inflation is expected to reach approximately 4,2%, adding that the European Union average is 2,5% and about 3% according to the Maastricht criteria. CNA/MK/RG/2000

    [04] French Foreign Minister - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 12 (CNA) - French Foreign Minister, Hubert Vedrine, whose country presides over the European Union this half of the year, said today that the Union invites the parties concerned in the Cyprus problem to enter into substantive talks and reiterated the 15-nation bloc's support for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Addressing today's session of the UN General Assembly, Vedrine said "the European Union considers that the status quo in Cyprus is unacceptable and supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to reach a negotiated comprehensive, fair and lasting settlement, consistent with the relevant Security Council resolutions".

    [05] President Clerides - UN Secretary General - Proximity talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 12 (CNA) - Proximity talks on the Cyprus problem began today in New York, with a meeting between President Glafcos Clerides and UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan, in the presence of the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto.

    President Clerides is accompanied by Attorney General Alecos Markides, Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou and senior Foreign Ministry officers. CNA/MM/RG/MK/2000

    [06] Greek Foreign Minister - US Secretary of State - Cyprus problem

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 12 (CNA) - Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou, has said that his country's first priority at the UN was the Cyprus problem and noted that the United States were willing to work towards substantive negotiations.

    Speaking after a meeting today with US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, Papandreou said he told his US counterpart that the improvement of Greco-Turkish relations depended on a settlement in Cyprus, divided since Turkey invaded and occupied the northern third of the island in 1974.
